New lighting standards begin in 2012 which means common light bulbs sold in the U.S. will need to use about 25% less energy. Many bulbs already meet these new standards, including compact flourescent bulbs (CFLs), LEDs and incandescents. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Energy Savers website provides information on the new lighting standards.

The site also provides information about shopping for incandescent, CFL and LED bulbs using lumens as a guide as opposed to watts.
