WattWatcher® Time-of-Use rates

Save money by using off-peak electricity

How does the WattWatcher Program work?

The WattWatcher concept is relatively simple–you sign up for special billing and receive a much lower rate for using electricity during off-peak hours. The more off-peak electricity you use, the more you save.

Our power supplier, Tri-State Generation and Transmission, offers us a lower rate for purchasing electricity during off-peak hours, and we pass the savings along to you.

The off-peak hours:

Winter hours

  • September 15th - May 14th
  • Daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • All day Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Summer hours

  • May 15th - September 14th
  • Monday - Friday, 10 p.m. to 10 a.m.
  • All day Saturday and Sunday

The WattWatcher® rates:

• Off-peak rate = 4.2 cents per kilowatt hour.
• On-peak rate = 14.6 cents per kilowatt hour.
• Base charge/month = $14.00

The regular residential rate for a consumer using 750 kilowatt-hours a month is 10.7 cents per kilowatt-hour used.

The keys to saving with the WattWatcher program are:

Watt Watcher Rates1. Installing timers on your big power users (electric water heaters, electric thermal storage units, etc.) so they run during off-peak hours.

2. Do the following during off-peak hours:

• Run your dishwasher.
• Wash and dry clothes.
• Run self-cleaning oven cycle.

3. Additional steps you can take are:

• Installing a timer on your water bed.
• Installing programmable thermostats to automatically control your heat.
• Installing load control equipment.

A one-time service charge will be billed to the customer’s account ($20 for existing accounts and $30 for new accounts).

The guarantee:

WattWatcher customers regularly report that merely putting their room heaters and water heaters on timers and not being too careful about anything else still saves them money compared to the regular residential rates (or just their water heaters if they don’t have electric heat). But, of course, the more off-peak electricity you use, the more you can save.

So here’s the best part:

For the first year, we guarantee you won’t pay higher rates.

You will be billed at the regular residential rate and the WattWatcher rate. Whichever bill is lower is the bill you will receive. After the first year, you have the option of staying on the WattWatcher program or returning to regular billing (a $20 service fee is charged for returning).
